Auditory Information Improves Time-to-collision Estimation for Accelerating Vehicles

چکیده
Abstract To cross a road safely, pedestrians estimate the time remaining until an approaching vehicle arrives at their location (time-to-collision, TTC). For visually presented accelerated objects, however, TTC estimates are known to show first-order pattern indicating that acceleration is not adequately considered. We investigated whether added sound can reduce these estimation errors. Twenty-five participants estimated of vehicles with constant velocity or accelerating, from pedestrian’s perspective curb in traffic simulation. visually-only accelerating vehicles, showed expected and thus large With sound, was largely removed, were significantly more accurate compared visual-only presentation. velocities, both presentation conditions predominantly accurate. Taken together, compensate for erroneous visual presumably by promoting consideration acceleration.

A Probabilistic Approach to Collision Risk Estimation for Passenger Vehicles
Active safety and collision avoidance (CA) is a growing field within the automotive industry. The aim of CA systems is to prevent or mitigate collisions by active interventions i.e. warning, braking and steering. For many reasons, such as driver acceptance of the system and legal requirement that the system itself must not cause hazards, the decision making is a crucial part of the system. This...
متن کاملEstimation of Time-to-Collision Maps
We address in this paper the problem of estimating time-to-collision maps involving all the objects in relative motion with respect to the camera. The approach only takes into account normal flows. Moreover we prove that first-order visual motion models are sufficient to obtain time-to-collision. Experiments have been carried out on real images to validate the performance of the method.
متن کاملBinocular information about time to collision and time to passage
It is well known that, when an object's horizontal relative disparity is changing appropriately, most observers report a compelling impression that the object is approaching and will collide with the observers at some future instant. Here I derive a new equation, namely TTC approximates (ddelta/dt)/(d(2)delta/dt(2)). This equation relates TTC to retinal image variables without involving a knowl...
متن کاملTime-optimal collision avoidance of automatically guided vehicles
Collision avoidance is a main issue in applications employing free-ranging, computer-controlled vehicles. In this paper we look at the regulation of locally crossing traffic. Collisions are typically avoided by changing speed and/or changing route, but– to keep efficiency high– as minimal as possible. If we look at humans going by foot in crowded areas or driving by car in urban traffic, we obs...
متن کاملUnifying Time to Contact Estimation and Collision Avoidance across Species
The τ-function and the η-function are phenomenological models that are widely used in the context of timing interceptive actions and collision avoidance, respectively. Both models were previously considered to be unrelated to each other: τ is a decreasing function that provides an estimation of time-to-contact (ttc) in the early phase of an object approach; in contrast, g has a maximum before t...
